Myths and Facts on White Boxers
Myth #1: White boxers are albino.
Fact: White boxers are not albino. The white color is a throw back to the bulldog which is one of the foundations of our breed. In fact, boxers used to be predominantly white with checks of color until it was bred out due to it being detrimental to guard and protection work and war work. They were too easily seen, especially at night.
White boxers can have patches of color, some may have blue eyes, and noses usually fill in black. The black spotting on noses starts around a week old and are usually filled in by 16 weeks.
Myth #2: White boxers are rare.
Fact: Approximately 25% of all boxer litters are white or predominantly white. They are not rare at all. You should never pay more for a white boxer puppy than for their littermates with color.
Myth #3: White boxers have more health problems than fawn and brindle boxers.
Fact: Though white boxers CAN be born deaf and very rarely, blind, they do not suffer any more health problems than their fawn or brindle counterparts. Also, if a white puppy is not deaf as a puppy, it will not develop deafness later in life due to its white color.
White boxers can sunburn their noses and ears so an occasional smearing of children's sunscreen on those extra sunny days does prove beneficial.
Myth #4: White boxers have different temperaments than fawn or brindle boxers.
Fact: Not at all. They are the same bouncing, loving, playful boxers as the fawns and brindles.
More Facts:
1. White boxers should be spayed or neutered. Breeding for the white color is discouraged due to the deafness issue.
2. Being more than 1/3 white is a disqualification in the conformation show ring. Conformation shows evaluate future breeding stock. It's not advisable to breed white boxers.
3. The American Boxer Club has recently voted to allow breeders to place white boxer puppies with Limited AKC Registration upon proof of the puppy being spayed or neutered. This allows owners of white puppies to be able to compete in AKC performance events like obedience and agility. Before owners would have to go through the lengthy process of getting an ILP number through the AKC in order to compete. There are successful white boxers competing in obedience and agility today!
4. Anyone should be proud of owning or liking white boxers. They are the same intelligent, athletic, wonderful dogs that wrap themselves completely around your heart!
